How to make a birthday feel personal without overdoing it

You do not need a theme, a slideshow or a speech. You need three good details.

Personal does not mean elaborate. Most of the best birthdays come down to a few details that could only be about one person.

Collect before you plan

Ask two or three of their friends for one story each. You will end up with better material than any theme could give you.

Use the stories, lightly

  • Name a drink after their most famous mistake
  • Put one old photo on the table, not forty
  • Let a friend read a short story out loud

Then stop. The goal is for them to feel known for an evening, not studied.

Good gifts are hard.
